Season’s greetings from all of us and we wish you a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.Season’s Greetings From The Newell & Wright Group

It has been a very interesting year with our rail port increasing in capacity in each of the last 12 months. In addition we have expanded our fleet of trucks with brand new Mercedes, Volvo and Scania vehicles all being state of the art and offering the latest technology for haulage. November 2016
Eight New Trucks Join The Newell & Wright Fleet

We are pleased to announce the purchase and delivery of eight new trucks to our fleet. The new additions include six MAN TGX trucks, one Mercedes Actros truck and one Scania R450 truck. All eight trucks are now in a uniform sign written logo and livery. We are very pleased with these investments and additions to our expanding fleet with these 66 plate trucks already on the road.Eight New Trucks Join The Newell & Wright Fleet

The MAN TGX is the truck for demanding national and international long-haul traffic. More than 100 years' history of MAN trucks prove that efficiency is more for us than just a trademark. The Mercedes Actros is now easier and safer to drive, and more outstandingly capable than any other big truck that’s gone before. This is perfect for our requirements for long distance container haulage.

Scania is now introducing a 13-litre inline 6-cylinder engine with 450 horsepower that only requires SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) after treatment to meet Euro 6. This solution offers reduced complexity and lower diesel consumption for most driving situations, whether for long-haulage or other applications. Renewable Road Haulage Fuels Requires Government Input

Renewable energy must account for 15% of all electricity, heat and transport fuels in the UK and at least 10% of transport fuels must be renewable. The parliamentary Energy and Climate Change Committee released its latest report ‘2020 renewable heat and transport targets’ recently and the report shows electrification of HGVs to be unlikely any time in the near future.Renewable Road Haulage Fuels Requires Government Input

The FTA Head of National and Regional Policy, and someone who provided evidence to the Committee stated “This report provides clear evidence that Government must review its current policy on renewable transport fuels. Whilst the UK must meet renewable energy targets, the freight sector is also under enormous pressure to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality, but we need the policies in place to make alternatives feasible. A greater proportion of Office for Low Emission Vehicles funding is also required for the freight sector if the UK is to meet the renewable energy targets. Lack of refuelling infrastructure and added expense of alternatives makes the business case extremely difficult for operators." September 2016
Government Undertakes Bigger Road Haulage Freight Trailer Trial

Back in 2012 the UK Government launched a trial allowing up to 1,800 longer semi-trailers to be utilised on the UK roads under a special licence agreement. The trailers are up to 2.05 metres longer than the current standard of 13.6m. Increased road haulage efficiency is seen as a vital way of remaining competitive in the transportation industry and the trial has demonstrated a number of gains without an increase in safety risks. Government Undertakes Bigger Road Haulage Freight Trailer Trial

Around 90,000 trips have been completed as part of the trial and all indications are that longer haulage trailers will be part of the transportation industry moving forward. The FTA (Freight Transport Association) commented with Karen Dee, FTA’s Director of Policy, saying ”Almost three quarters of goods movements are carried by road rather than by rail or water. We need to maximise the use of rail and water freight as part of making the UK’s supply chain as efficient, clean and safe as possible, but they can never replace road that is why we need to maximise the efficiency of road freight as well as the other modes.” Contact Newell & Wright Group on 01142 423367 and speak to one of the team. August 2016
FairFuel UK, Road Haulage & Transport Groups Seek Fuel Duty Reduction

Launched in January 2011 with the support of funding backers the Freight Transport Association and the Road Haulage Association, and more recently the Association of Pallet Networks, FairFuelUK is the award winning Public Affairs Campaign that fights on your behalf for lower fuel duty and fairer more transparent pricing at the pumps. FairFuelUK with its 1.2m supporters growing by the day has fought off £57bn in FUEL TAX hikes since 2011. Pump prices would be 16 to 20 pence more if it was not for the FairFuelUK Campaign.FairFuel UK, Road Haulage & Transport Groups Seek Fuel Duty Reduction

UK Fuel duty plus VAT now amounts to approximately 70% to 75% every time you fill up at the pumps. We have the highest Fuel Duty levels in the EU for diesel and 3rd highest for petrol. The Treasury views fuel duty as a strategically important revenue generator and a way to raise taxes. The good news is that over 140 MP’s support the campaign which is key to helping us to make the Chancellor and his team take note. Most importantly it is the number of supporters that make the difference to stopping any rises in duty. Contact Newell & Wright Group on 01142 423367 and speak to one of the team. July 2016
HS2 Route For South Yorkshire Proposal Changes

As a large transportation based in the centre of England close to Rotherham and Sheffield we are keen to look at the developments of the proposed HS2 route which is planned to go through South Yorkshire near Rotherham and Sheffield. The previous plan was that Sheffield’s HS2 station would be out of town at Meadowhall and now the plan is being proposed to change this so the Sheffield destination leads to the current Sheffield Midland train station very near the centre of the city.HS2 Route For South Yorkshire Proposal Changes

Using the existing Sheffield Midland station for HS2 services also opens up the possibility of running high speed trains from Sheffield to Leeds by building a link back onto the main HS2 line north of Sheffield. High Speed 2 is a planned high-speed railway line connecting the city centres of Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds. The railway is to be delivered in two phases. The first phase linking London and Birmingham, the second linking Birmingham with Manchester and Leeds. Phase Two is planned for completion in 2032–33 and this is the line that will impact Rotherham and Sheffield.

The concept was that all major cities in the area covered by HS2 would have a city centre station. Liverpool along with London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds was envisaged to have a city centre HS2 station. The preliminary route for Phase Two was announced on 28 January 2013. It is envisaged construction on Phase Two will start in 2022. Contact Newell & Wright Group on 01142 423367 and speak to one of the team. June 2016
Transport Secretary Has Announced Diesel Taxes Could Be Increased To Cut Air Pollution

Users of Diesel including the UK haulage industry will be hit by tax rises in order to cut air pollution, the Transport Secretary stated in June 2016. Patrick McLoughlin stated that increasing fuel duties and low emission taxes “is something the Chancellor will need to look at” as an attempt to reduce levels of nitrogen oxide and prevent deaths in cities. His statement is being discussed by UK road haulage companies which would see any increase in taxation making businesses less competitive and increase prices in the shops for consumers.Transport Secretary Has Announced Diesel Taxes Could Be Increased To Cut Air Pollution

The announcement comes after the UK government rejected calls for a diesel scrappage scheme offering drivers of diesel cars cash incentives to trade them in. Recent statistics show that usage of HGV transportation has reduced since 2008 whilst LGV transportation has increased. Contact Newell & Wright Group on 01142 423367 and speak to one of the team.
